FBI Warns Smartphone Users of Advanced Scam Impersonating Trusted Organizations

The FBI is warning smartphone users about a new and dangerous scam. While scam calls are nothing new, this latest scheme is more sophisticated and harder to spot, putting both iPhone and Android users at risk. Federal agents say scammers are using a mix of phone calls and advanced tech tactics, making it even trickier for people to realize they are being deceived.

New Scam Puts Smartphone Users at Risk

Scammers are now posing as trusted organizations such as tech support, banks, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), or even local law enforcement. They use caller ID spoofing to make their calls appear genuine, deceiving victims into thinking they are speaking with a legitimate authority. This tactic makes the scam highly convincing and difficult to detect, as the calls seem to come from familiar, official sources.

Once victims are hooked, they are pressured into making payments to unknown accounts or downloading malicious software. As with many scams, fraudsters create a sense of urgency, making victims believe immediate action is necessary. Worse, once the malware is installed, it becomes extremely difficult to remove, even if the user realizes they’ve been targeted, according to indy100.
